In a computer network environment, the file server is perhaps one
of the most important piece of equipment. Shared programs and accounting
data usually reside in the server. The server also acts as a security
guard, preventing unauthorised personnel from accessing privileged
information and/or other network equipment.
Like any piece of electronic equipment, the server is subject
to failure and sabotage, whether intentional or otherwise. How should
you safeguard your server and the important data that resides in
it? Here are some tips:
• |
Ensure that every user has a valid login
name and password to access the server; and that these are deleted
for users who have resigned. This aspect is often overlooked.
|
• |
Backup data on a daily basis, and keep backup
tapes in a safe place. |
• |
Purchase and install the latest antivirus
software, and ensure that the scanning software is kept updated.
|
• |
Perform regular housekeeping on the server's
hard disk by removing any unwanted files |
• |
Ensure that the server is connected to an
uninterrupted power supply (UPS). |
• |
Perform periodic maintenance or 'tune-up'
on the server by an experienced network engineer. |
